One of our favorite rainy day activities is to make art projects with random items around the house! Baby Ventures illustrator and artist Lisa Hall shares how she got her creative start in an awesome and unusual way, thanks to one particular rainstorm:
“As a Peace Corps Volunteer, I spent two years living in a village in Mali, West Africa. One day after a heavy rainstorm, the roads were washed out and I couldn’t make my rounds to the surrounding villages doing health education for the next few days. With nothing pressing to do, I felt an immense urge to create. So I gathered all the scraps of paper lying around in my hut and then went on a hunt for materials. I soon came across a few cans of touch-up car paint and my love of painting was born. I spent the next three days in creative bliss and painted my own original artwork for the first time!”
You don’t need to travel as far as Mali to let your creative side loose! Just take a cue from mother nature and break out whatever is lying around next time a rainy day washes out your plans. From finger painting (don’t sweat the mess!) to macaroni gluing (smiles for grandma!) or good old crayon coloring, getting creative together is a guaranteed rainy day adventure!
One does not need to be an “artist” to be creative. Just looking around & using natural items can be creative. So many ways to channel the inner creativity we have. With spring here cut branches & flowers in the yard to create!!
